Excellence in Teaching Confernce - 2009

The Notre Dame Alumni Association welcomes K–12 educators for a weekend of personal and professional renewal on the Notre Dame campus in Notre Dame, IN. This award-winning conference, which draws teachers and administrators from public, Catholic, and private schools nationwide, provides the right combination of practical applications and inspiration. The conference is open to all teachers, not just Notre Dame alumni. This year’s conference, which takes place October 9-11, will focus on the individuality of children.

This year’s conference workshops will be presented by Thomas Armstrong, Ph.D., an award-winning author and speaker with more than 30 years of teaching experience from the primary through the doctoral level. An experienced speaker, Armstrong’s clients range from Sesame Street to the Republic of Singapore. He will discuss Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences (MI theory), walk participants through a self-assessment, and detail how to constructively identify multiple intelligences in students. Seminars offered at the conference will include “Multiple Intelligences in the Classroom” and “Awakening the Genius in Every Child.”

The Notre Dame Club of Lee County is proud to sponsor a teacher from Southwest Florida at the Excellence in Teaching Conference.

For the fouth year, the Notre Dame Club of Lee County has partnered with Bishop Verot Catholic High School to send a faculty member to the conference. Selected by Principal Father J. Christian Beretta, OSFS, and the Chaplain for the Notre Dame Club of Lee County, to attend this years’ conference is Ms. Shannon Larrea, a Bishop Verot Catholic High School biology teacher.  We congratulate Ms. Larrea and hope for a very rewarding experience.

The conference strives to recognize and stimulate a more charismatic and effective style of teaching. Ideas learned on this weekend will help deepen the participants’ appreciation for their vocation and the contributions they make to their students. The Excellence in Teaching Conference has earned the Grand Gold Award from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education.

In addition to the Notre Dame Club of Lee County and Bishop Verot Catholic High School, this year's conference is again sponsored by Dr. James A. and Dr. Yolanda F. Mitchell, DDS. Jim and Yolanda have three children that have graduated from Bishop Verot Catholic High School. Two have since graduated from Notre Dame. Their daughter is at Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame, IN.

For the past five years, the Notre Dame Club of Lee County is proud to have sponsored the following teachers to attend Excellence in Teaching Conference on the campus of the University of Notre Dame.

Hesburgh Lecture Series

The Club is planning to host a Hesburgh Lecture Series Lecture in November. Stay tuned for additional details on time and location. We are planning to have Dr. Kathy Sullivan present her talk on "Servant Leadership: The Intersection of the Beatitudes and the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People".

In their simplicity, the Beatitudes offer a pathway to true success. The discussion will focus on each of the Beatitudes, mindful of the challenge and promise of these sacred words. An overview of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People in light of the Beatitudes will enlighten our efforts to lead with the spirit of the servant leader.

Kathleen Sullivan joined the Notre Dame Alumni Association in 1987 after receiving her doctorate degree in English from Notre Dame. In 2006, she assumed the role of senior director of Spirituality and Service for alumni. She eagerly looks forward to helping connect the Notre Dame family for good, for God, and for life.
